I was raised on our 11th generation family farm in Connecticut where my father raised sheep which kindled my fascination with natural fibers. I moved to California in 1975 to pursue my interest in weaving and dyeing and began Carleton Designs rug-weaving studio in 1980 with my late husband and business partner, Vincent Carleton.
I work with all natural fibers and materials in my rug making projects: wool, linen, paper, leather and suede.
I enjoy hiking in my spare time and many of my pieces are directly influenced by these hikes in nature. I am inspired by the color palettes and patterns in the plants and wildlife in my rural environment.
